The Oakland A's apologized for fighting with Smash Mouth.

Every ogre’s favourite pop-rock band, Smash Mouth, have triumphed over their fair share of adversity over the years; bread assaults and egg-based cyber-harassment roll off their backs like swamp water off Shrek’s. But what happens when San Jose’s favourite sons are relentlessly bullied and it doesn’t involve food?

The world found out the answer this weekend when Smash Mouth decided to take a cheap shot at the Oakland A’s, making their opinions known about how the team should manage its roster:

Whoever runs the official Athletics Twitter feed understandably took umbrage at being dissed by the “All Star” guys, and promptly lost their shit. In a series of now-deleted tweets, the As furiously took Steve Harwell and co. to task:

Smash Mouth, perhaps unused to angry tweets and not loaves of bread being flung their way, were taken aback:

It’s all good now though, just in case you were worried about the diplomatic relations between a small-market MLB organization and Smash Mouth. Clearer heads prevailed, and the A’s publicly apologized to Smash Mouth, offering them first pitch and free tickets. Let’s hope the original tweeter still has a job:

Aw, don’t back down so easily next time Oakland! I was hoping for a “Stomp Astro Lounge Day” at Alameda.

Oh, and just FYI: In 2009, Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell threw out the first pitch at a Tampa Bay Rays game wearing a jersey that said MR. MOUTH on the back. Just wanted to put that out there:

EDIT: Smash Mouth says this isn’t Steve Harwell. The video begs to differ! We’re waiting on a response…
