The Jane's Addiction singer says EDM has ruined his love of house music.

As the music of his bands Jane’s Addiction and Porno for Pyros would suggest, Perry Farrell has quite the eclectic taste in music. The creation of his long-running Lollapalooza event (first as a touring festival, now as a weekend destination event) allowed him to give a stage to many of his favourite rock, hip-hop and electronic acts – but in a recent Chicago Tribune interview, he revealed that he’s not necessarily a fan of all electronic music.

He explained that when Lollapalooza relaunched in 2005, he was thrilled to have a stage named after him and pretty excited that it would feature dance music. However, the evolution of dance music has resulted in the Perry Farrell stage showcasing some music that he is, um, less than enthusiastic about.

When they said they wanted to name a stage after me, I was honoured. I like the adulation. But now you say, ‘Perry, what’s going on with your area here?’ Believe me, I’ve got questions myself. I hate EDM. I want to vomit it out of my nostrils. I can’t stand what it did to what I love, which is house music, which was meditative, psychedelic — it took you on a journey. I sometimes cringe at my own festival.

While Farrell would love to kick EDM to the curb, he admits doing so is unlikely because of its ubiquitous nature.

“You’d have to do away with pop to escape it, and if you want to do a festival you can’t do away with pop,” he lamented. However, he swears that his new Las Vegas multi-disciplinary event will shun EDM completely. “At my new project, there will be great house music. I hope I will keep EDM at the door. They will be turned away.” This being Perry Farrell, you can be pretty sure that’s a guarantee.
