Prince's vault contains enough unheard music to release an album per year for a century.

Sure, many musicians might go on and on about their musical vaults, but usually that just means an OSX folder full of tossed-off C-sides and albums of studio porridge consumption after leaving an elbow on the record button.

Leave it to Prince to actually have a treasure trove worth a damn – an actual, physical bank vault in the basement of Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minnesota, accessible only to Prince and those with the access code. Why can’t we get a Geraldo special about a legitimately cool vault for once?

Now, ABC News reports that Prince’s purple repository has been opened by Bremer Trust, the administrator of the artist’s estate in the absence of a will. As Bremer didn’t have the access code, they were reportedly forced to drill through the thick door of the vault in order to gain access – and when they did, they discovered shelves and shelves of unreleased music, apparently enough for Prince’s estate to release an album a year for next century.

At a short probate hearing with Prince’s family members in attendance this morning, a judge reaffirmed the decision to appoint Bremer Trust as administrator of Prince’s estate. No will has yet been found, but Bremer says they will continue to search, even though Prince’s family members are aware of one existing.

The 57-year-old superstar’s death on April 21st is now the subject of a criminal probe, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The Carver County Sheriff’s Office has cited an exception to Minnesota public record law in suppressing the complete information regarding the 911 response to Paisley Park the night of Prince’s death. This doesn’t necessarily mean that any charges will be filed, just that it’s a possibility in the near future.

According to sources close to the case, the criminal probe is primarily investigating if an overdose of opioids may have led to Prince’s death, and if so, how Prince procured the drugs and who provided them.

Prince was cremated last week, with a private service held at Paisley Park.
