Prince's engineer says his vault of unreleased music should finally be opened.

UPDATE: A Minnesota judge has now confirmed that Prince did not have a will. TMZ reports that his assets worth close to $150 million will be distributed to his brothers and sisters. Prince’s half-brother Omarr Baker also surfaced at the court hearing.

If you’ve been looking for definitive proof that Prince’s passing took even him by surprise, his sister Tyka Nelson has revealed that the Purple One had no known will at the time of his death. As commenters have pointed out, this could lead to a legal battle of Dickensian proportions over the superstar’s fortune and heavily protected vault of unreleased material:

The Hollywood Reporter shared the story that Tyka Nelson, the only living member of Prince’s immediate family, has filed the paperwork to become the appointed executor of his estate. Prince was married and divorced twice, but has no children. The specific numbers behind his paisley possessions are currently unknown, though Prince earned hundreds of millions throughout his career, along with over $27 million in property.

As an artist known for maintaining complete control, this may change everything. Susan Rogers, the sound engineer who worked with Prince from 1983-1987 and played the primary role in amassing his infamous vault of unreleased songs believes it should finally be opened up to historians, scholars, and fans.

“I’d like to see the music put in the hands of the people who knew him best artistically and that would be the musicians who worked with him through different eras,” said Rogers. “Music is an expression of life and let’s hear these expressions of Prince’s life.”

Plans have already been announced to turn Prince’s Paisley Park estate into a Graceland-style museum.
