They rapped about oral sex and honour killings. Before 9 a.m. On Family Day.

If you’re a regular viewer of CTV’s Canada AM morning show, you may just be an early riser. However, chances are you’re a retiree or parent getting a jump on the day’s news and being tickled pink by an interesting guest. That’s why it seems a bit bonkers that on a Monday morning, the program welcomed two battle rappers to give viewers a taste of the “lyrical art form.”

How did it go, you wonder? C’mon… you know exactly how it went. No? Well, peep the program’s first tweet following the broadcast:

“OK,” you might say, “but network television is so touchy about any content that’s not Disney-level G-rated. I bet they didn’t say anything that offensive!” Ladies and gentlemen, Exhibit B: one of the rappers’ (since deleted) Facebook statuses immediately after the battle:

That is correct: these dudes threw down disses about receiving fellatio from each other and referenced immodesty-related honour killing in Arab countries on national TV. Before 9 a.m. Those are among many other tasteless jokes that we should make clear we don’t find funny.

Now, honestly, anyone familiar with battle rapping will know that HFK and Charron toned things way down for this performance. But it’s safe to say they were still about three MPAA ratings too high for ol’ Canada AM. Oh, and remember this was the Family Day holiday, so the grandkids were probably kicking around to ask why the nice bearded gentleman wrote a Valentine’s letter to his right hand.

Honestly, just watch the video (filmed on a cellphone by a friend of the battle rappers) and imagine the cringefest in the control room.
