Dave Grohl has always been thought of as the modern saviour of rock ‘n’ roll, a long-haired dude who shreds his guitars, pummels his drums and belts out alt-radio anthem after alt-radio anthem. And while he’s certainly proven he knows his way around a meaty guitar riff or two, he appears to be getting bored with the genre. Instead, he’s trying his hand at a rap career.

Sources close to Grohl explain that he first fell in love with Atlanta’s trunk-rattling trap music scene when scoping locations for his beloved HBO series Sonic Highways.

Though they ultimately passed on filming an episode there, he ended up getting in touch with big-ticket producers like 808 Mafia, Southside, Sonny Digital and Metro Boomin. It’s rumoured that a full mixtape of trap music will arrive shortly. For this project, he’s simply shortened his name to Grohl.

Earlier today, a snippet of a new song called “Feast or Famine” surfaced. Though it’s only 40 seconds long, the track features airhorns and DJ drops atop a fairly straightforward trap beat full of skittering drums, brash synthetic horns and a creeping synth run. That sets the backdrop for Grohl to hate on record labels and boast about rolling up at the club.

Whether you see it as a midlife crisis gone bad or simply the evolution of an artist stretching out his wings, there’s no stopping the artist in his new-found passion. Stay tuned for more on Grohl as it becomes available.
