Let’s get one thing straight: Dave Grohl is not like us. But in spite of his legacy as one of rock and roll’s living legends, he manages to endear himself not as a guitar-slinging, drum-bashing demigod, but as an everyman who just happens to be worth more than $225 million. It’s that approachability that led one fan, Andrew Coldin, to start a crowdfunding campaign to bring Grohl’s Foo Fighters to Richmond, Virginia.

Grohl was immediately receptive to the idea, saying that it could become the way bands decide where they want to play, and months after saying “if [the Foo Fighters] hear that people want us to come somewhere, maybe we’ll come there,” he’s put his money where his mouth is. On Twitter yesterday, the band confirmed that Coldin’s campaign was a riveting success. After raising nearly $70,000, the Foo Fighters are planning to play Richmond venue The National on September 17th.

Not only is this a big deal for Foo Fighters fans, since the 1,500 capacity venue is far smaller than the stadiums they usually play, but it’s a big step for the music industry. We’re not sure that crowdfunded concerts are the future of concerts, but they’re certainly part of it. We’ve said it before, but Dave Grohl really is one of the smartest minds in music.
