Two months ago, on what would have been Kurt Cobain’s 47th birthday, we celebrated the secret side of the Nirvana singer’s life. In 20 candid photos, we saw some of his playful side: His love of cats, affinity for fast food statues and awkward teenaged years.

These next few days are a little different. For Nirvana fans, April 5th is the day their icon died. And in the 20 years since, it’s remained a point of contention. Maybe Courtney Love did it? Like, probably not… but maybe. Regardless, that a seemingly clear-cut suicide can remain up for debate two decades later speaks to Cobain’s wide-reach and influence. Today, we look at the defining images he left behind. They aren’t so much playful or sad. This is Kurt Cobain, larger than life.
