It's the comeback nobody was asking for with Eddie Murphy announcing that he's stepping away from the fat suits that ruined his career for a triumphant return to music.

It’s the comeback nobody was asking for with Eddie Murphy announcing that he’s stepping away from the fat suits that ruined his career for a triumphant return to music.

Murphy unveiled his first new song on a newly minted Twitter account, but “Red Light” probably isn’t what fans of his classic material were expecting. Luckily, there probably aren’t many of them.

Seemingly tired from partying all the time, “Red Light” takes a chill pill to Murphy’s frantic energy. A guest verse from the often-awake Snoop Lion only adds to the song’s temperament, which immediately falls somewhere between Matisyahu and Cory Feldman.

Sure, Murphy’s got a pretty decent voice, and the song is non-threatening enough to make him some money, but the accent he’s singing it reminds us far too much of Coming to America to take it seriously. Just listen to the hook and try not to picture Prince Akeem when he sings “theees is a red light.”

There’s apparently an official video for “Red Light” on the way, but while we speculate on how many characters Murphy will play in the final clip we’re happy to share this unofficial “behind the scenes” performance version that’s been circulating on YouTube for the last two months. How did we miss this?

On Instagram, Murphy revealed that his new album, 9 will be out, uh… soon. It’s his first since 1993’s Love’s Alright.

We can’t wait.
