The current status of punk legends Black Flag is prefaced by an interesting argument with remaining members splintering the band into two, Flag and, naturally, Black Flag. The question was who did it better versus who did it first, and today the original name-bearers unveiled a new track to give their side of the argument.

While FLAG arguably features a better line-up of Bill Stevenson, Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski and Stephen Egerton, the Ron Reyes and Greg Ginn led Black Flag has beat them to the punch with this new song, “Down in the Dirt.”

But never one to let their music do the talking, Black Flag are using the opportunity to take pot-shots at the other side, claiming in a statement that Flag are fakers covering Black Flag songs and “mailing it in.”

“We urge you to check out the real BLACK FLAG when they hit your area,” says the statement. For Canadians, that means Vancouver on July 20th at the Chinese Cultural Centre. Does their attitude reek of desperation? We’ll let you decide.

As for Flag, they’ve kept their mouths quiet here. As far as we know they’re not planning on putting out any new music any time soon, so Black Flag beats them to the punch here, too, with their new album due out some time this year.
