From 1983 to 1985, Kira Roessler replaced Black Flag’s original bassist Chuck Dukowski. She joined Henry Rollins, Greg Ginn and co. in the LA hardcore punk band for five albums before marrying The Minutemen’s Mike Watt and collaborating on his projects Firehose and Dos.

During her punk heyday, Roessler also studied engineering at UCLA. She has put her degree to good use in the past few decades, working on movies such as The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, plus the HBO TV shows Game of Thrones and John Adams, for which she won an Emmy.

At the 88th Academy Awards, Roessler took home an Oscar for Best Sound Editing on Mad Max: Fury Road. Among the film’s other sonic highlights, we can thank her for bringing the Doof Warrior’s flamethrower guitar to life. She may be the only punk legend with a shot at an EGOT, so here’s hoping someone writes a Black Flag Broadway show soon.
