You may recognize David Liebe Hart from Adult Swim’s Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job as one of the main inhabitants of their twisted universe, but unlike fictional creations like Spagett or Casey and his Brother, he played himself. Accompanied by an array of disturbing manikins, he came to the fore singing strangely-catchy songs like “Salame,” an ode to a race of aliens named the Korendians.

Now that Awesome Show has ended its run, his next project is a full-length album, for which he’s currently fundraising on Kickstarter (go here to donate). I had a chance to sit down with him and talk about it. The interview was conducted via email, but we were both sitting down.

You want to record a punk album, which will be a shock to some of the fans of your music from Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job. How long have you been playing punk music?

I have been performing punk rock music since 2010 with the Monsters album. I’ve been writing songs with Adam Papagan all the way back to 2008 with the Public Access album. I’m a train buff so we made another album called Trains of the Past and Present to satisfy me, then we made a punk rock style album to satisfy him. We made all those albums on his computer so the quality isn’t real professional. People really liked my first punk rock album so we got a band together and now we perform those kinds of songs all over the country.

What led you to turn to the Internet for funding?

The only people who seem to like me are younger people. My own generation doesn’t care for me. I have a lot of fans on the internet, so I thought they could help me if the conservative people my own age wouldn’t.

You say on your Kickstarter page that you want to record a song about La Rent, an alien who doesn’t want you to look at porn. Where did that idea come from?

La Rent is an alien who lives up north in Chino, CA. I have contact with all kinds of aliens. My Grandmother Schroeder told me before she died that we were related to Orville and Wilbur Wright who got the back-engineering for the airplane from The Korendians. They’ve given us so much good technology. Anyway, this alien La Rent called me on the phone and told me that it was wrong to look at porn. He says it’s disrespectful to women and that sex out of marriage is wrong.

Do your ideas generally just come to you or do you have a process?

Ideas just come to me, and I write a song about it. I’ve written thousands of songs so I’ve gotten really good at it. Usually I write the words and Adam Papagan writes the music, except for “All My Friends Like Asian Girls,” which is words and music by me.

Have you attempted to make a professional-level recording in the past?

I’ve tried to make albums in the past but it’s been a disaster. There was this one guy, Tony Newton who I met at church, who charged me something like $5,000 to record an album. He took my money and didn’t even show up. I felt that was ice cold. There was another guy, Lloyd Major, who recorded my Gospel album but didn’t master the songs or nothing so they sound horrible. That was rough, because he’s an ex-Navy veteran like me.

What do you think of popular music today?

It’s cool. When we go on tour I get to see a lot of interesting music. Sometimes I see good punk music and sometimes it’s just so-so. I’m an oldie but a goodie, though, so I like a mixture of music.

When you turn on the radio, what do you listen to?

I haven’t driven since 1994, so I don’t turn on the radio. I need to gain the confidence to relearn how to drive, but until then the people who drive me pick the music. The Carpenters have a song about making contact with extraterrestrials. I love the good music they did. I also like the song by that Johnston guy [Daniel Johnston] who sings about Casper the ghost.

Are there any active artists or producers you’d be interested in collaborating with?

I’m happy to work with anyone who has talent, as long as they put their own flavoring to it. So many people do things that are the same, which is bland like tapioca pudding. People need to have their own originality like back in the 50’s.

Have you listened to LMFAO? They’re kind of a wacky pair like Tim and Eric. What are your thoughts on them?

We used some of their music on my rap mixtape last year. I like these guys, I feel they are very talented, but their music is not so much for me. I heard they’re dad is Motown, which is why they’re famous.

Do you have any more plans to create music with Tim and Eric?

I did the third season of Check it Out with John C. Reiley, and a new talk show, but other than that Tim and Eric don’t really like to use me anymore. They used to have me to come write songs everyday, but now they only use me like salt on their steak.
