A wrench has been thrown in Bobby Womack’s promising comeback trail, with Bootsy Collins (yes, this Bootsy Collins) breaking the unfortunate news that the 68-year-old soul singer has been diagnosed with colon cancer.

“We Pray for Bobby Womack Right Now, TO BE HEALED FROM PNEUMONIA AND ANY OTHER AILMENT HE IS FIGHTING AT THIS TIME. THIS SONG GOES OUT TO MY FRIEND BOBBY WE DID ON MY LATEST ALBUM,” wrote Collins on his Facebook page yesterday.

“I JUST SPOKE TO OUR FRIEND BOBBY WOMACK. He Wanted You All to Know That He Loves You & Thxs for the Prayers. Docs Says He Is In 1st Stage of Colon Cancer, He is Very Up Beat About His Future, we laughed & joked before we hung up. Thxs Funkateers, we will get him Back on the One!” he later added.

The Guardian notes that Womack’s had a number of health problems over the years. Last year he underwent treatment for prostate cancer, and he was rushed to hospital earlier this month for “severe shortness of breath,” for which a heart procedure was scheduled. He’s also diabetic.

Womack’s The Bravest Man in the Universe is still expected out on June 12th. If you missed it, listen to its first single, the outstanding “Please Forgive My Heart,” below.
