Not long ago it was announced Israeli filmmaker Oren Moverman would direct the highly anticipated biopic about iconic Nirvana singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain. In a recent unabridged feature for the The Guardian about past and present film biopics, Moverman spoke a bit about his current project comparing it to the the Dylan film I’m Not There, which he co-wrote with Todd Haynes.
“It’ll be raw and chaotic, which is what Cobain’s life was like, but it’s more linear than I’m Not There; it’ll take you from A to Z,” Moverman said. “People know the shortcut version—he took a lot of heroin, wrote ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, became the biggest rock star in the world and killed himself. Those known things about him are to me the least interesting.”
The as-yet-untitled film will be partially based on the Kurt Cobain biography Heavier Than Heaven by Charles R. Cross and much to the dismay of many Nirvana fans is being produced by Cobain’s widow Courtney Love. Actors to potentially play the leading row have consisted of Ryan Gosling and Robert Pattinson, but both have claimed they’re not fit for it.
