It didn't have to be said, but it kinda had to be said.

Could you imagine the Beastie Boys performing without MCA? That feels like sacrilege, doesn’t it? Mike D and Ad-Rock seem to agree.

“There will never be Beastie Boys live performances without Adam Yauch,” said a representative for the group following speculation over what a “live performance” trademark application by the Beastie Boys could be setting up.

Mike D and Ad-Rock have previously stressed that there would be no new music created under the Beastie Boys banner following MCA’s 2012 death. If the duo were to work on music together, it would be its own entity.

“Adam started the band, so we couldn’t do anything without him,” Ad-Rock told NME earlier in 2015.

There is one approved Beastie Boys project in the on-deck circle. Mike D and Ad-Rock have been working on a memoir since 2013. The book, described as “a pastiche of voices, images, irreverent humour and pop-culture reference points,” was initially projected to come out this fall, but that date’s been bumped back to 2017.
