But the e-mails!

Seemingly in response to Kesha and her legal team’s releasing of a batch of emails showing that he used abusive language in reference to the singer last week, Dr. Luke has now countered with some emails of his own, apparently in an attempt to prove to the court that the emails in no way “reflect any ‘abuse’ by [Luke], or any other type of behavior that could ever justify voiding her contracts.”

The original emails showed Dr. Luke, aka Lukasz Gottwald, discussing how Kesha “can be more disciplined with her diet,” as well as claiming that “A-list songwriters and producers are reluctant to give Kesha their songs because of her weight.” Gottwald’s legal team immediately decried the emails in a legal filing, which they say “purposefully misrepresent the truth.” Dr. Luke’s filing also states that “Kesha and her managers know full well that they are mischaracterizing this conduct as ‘abuse’ because Kesha, her managers, and others in Kesha’s life, frequently discussed her weight and dieting practices – and not in the most flattering of terms.”

Luke’s legal filing attempts to show that it wasn’t just him criticizing Kesha over her weight: included in the new emails is a 2015 message from manager Nicki Loranger, saying that Kesha must “stick to a meal plan” and the possibility of her “returning to rehab for a ‘Tune up.'” Other emails from the singer’s management to Luke comment negatively on Kesha’s behaviour, such as “”she really sounds like someone who is doing drugs. soo erratic,” and “just know that she is crazy,” both comments from figures at Kesha’s management company.

Also included in Luke’s released emails is a 2010 email from the producer to the singer, which states that “I know you said you looked like a lesbo but I disagree – you looked radiant and beautiful. You’re doing exactly what you’re meant to be doing right now. You’re actualizing your dreams. I’m proud of you and love you very much!”

As Kesha’s team continues to try to convince the courts to reconsider their prior decision not to release her from her contract with Dr. Luke, these new emails are just the newest front in the ongoing war of perception between the two camps.
