Weezy opens up on Solange's new album.

Highlighting today’s incredible slew of new releases is A Seat at the Table, the long awaited new Solange that was announced, oh, about a week ago. The album has a number of standouts, but “Mad” hits the quickest, primarily because of Lil Wayne’s guest verse. The first thing I thought when listening to it is, “yo, he’s gone full Drake,” but the second is, “wait, did he just casually reference his suicide attempt?” The third is, “wait, Lil Wayne tried to commit suicide?”

And when I attempted suicide, I didn’t die / I remember how mad I was on that day / Man, you gotta let it go before it get up in the way / Let it go, let it go

Lil Wayne’s health, mental or otherwise, has been less than stellar over the last few years. He’s had multiple seizures, spurred on by his love of lean, and after his relationship with former father figure Birdman broke down, he’s seemed to be in an increasingly dark place mentally. Fans especially took notice when he tweeted at 4am earlier this month about being “mentally defeated” and “done.”

As for the suicide attempt, we can’t be sure what he’s referring to. Maybe it’s about the time he shot himself as a teenager. Maybe it’s less direct, and a reference to his ongoing struggles with sizzurp. Or maybe it’s something entirely different, to do with the surprisingly starkness and loneliness he references on the cut. Whatever the case, it’s an interesting look into a superstar’s psyche, and a surprisingly vulnerable moment of acceptance and, we hope, moving-on, from one of the most charismatic rappers the game has ever seen.

Yeah, but I, got a lot to be mad about
Got a lot to be a man about
Got a lot to pop a xan about
I used to rock hand-me-downs, and now I rock standing crowds
But it’s hard when you only
Got fans around and no fam around
And if they are, then their hands are out
And they pointing fingers
When I wear this fucking burden on my back like a mother fucking cap and gown
Then I walk up in the bank, pants sagging down
And I laugh at frowns what they mad about?
Cause here come this motherfucker with this mass account
That didn’t wear cap and gown
Are you mad cause the judge ain’t give me more time
And when I attempted suicide, I didn’t die
I remember how mad I was on that day
Man, you gotta let it go before it get up in the way
Let it go, let it go
