Calgary twee-punks Pre Nup are equal parts sassy and melancholy.

Josiah and Sara Hughes, the only married couple in Calgarian twee-punk, return with the debut 7″ from their new band Pre Nup. It’s out July 15th as a co-release from Calgary’s Debt Offensive Records and Vancouver’s Kingfisher Bluez, but you can now stream it in full below.

The four-song single opens with “Wrong Your”, a sassy ode to proper spelling with lyrics like “Opinions are like assholes / And yours is full of shit.” From there, it continues its sarcastic self-awareness with “Air Quotes”, where Josiah Hughes sings “I try to hide / My thoughts inside / A poor disguise / A stupid guy.” Pre Nup strike a melancholy note on “Defending Your Life” and close out with the heavy “Cleansing Flood.” On the latter, drummer Sara Hughes adds her call-and-response howls to lyrics about an “SUV submerged in mud” and a city destroyed. It might be referencing the 2013 Sled Island flood or Jars of Clay.

As they explain in a statement, the Hughes duo behind the now defunct Grown-Ups “conceived their band as a wimpy and melodic pop project, but due to their own impatience the songs ended up loud and fast.” Live, Pre Nup is fleshed out with Chris Dadge and Darrell Hartsook from Lab Coast. If Blink-182 existed in an alternate reality and signed to Sarah Records, they might sound something like this.

Stream the four-song 7″ below, watch the band’s video for “Wrong Your”, and read on for their upcoming shows.
