The vegan singer is pissed at the punk legends for selling their song to a fast food ad.

Former Smiths frontman and famously outspoken curmudgeon Morrissey has gotten his BVDs in a twist again – but for this particular freak-out, he’s got considerable support in his corner. The singer has taken issue with legendary Manchester punk band the Buzzcocks allowing McDonald’s to use perhaps their most well-known tune, “What Do I Get?” in a new ad campaign.

It’s no surprise that Morrissey, a vegan and well known animal-rights activist, would take none to kindly to the pairing. True to You, a fanzine dedicated to all things Morrissey, attributed the following statement to the singer:

“Pete Shelley has allowed McDonald’s to use Buzzcocks’ ‘What do I get?’ to TV advertise McDonald’s new Big Flavour (the flavour being sawdust) Chicken Wraps?! In the words of another Buzzcocks song: oh shit…”

Buzzcocks fans aren’t too overjoyed with the band’s decision to license the tune either, and have been laying into singer/songwriter Pete Shelley. Comments on the YouTube video below include “Somebody’s broke” and the admittedly witty “What do I get? A load of royalties. Fucking sell outs.”

Calmer heads have pointed out it’s possible the Buzzcocks don’t own the full publishing rights to their music and couldn’t prevent the song’s licensing if they wanted to. With no word from Shelley and co. as of yet, though, Morrissey is no doubt going to do what he does best and talk an economy size helping of shit at their expense.
