'Keep your controller in your crib, don't come to work with training wheels.'

What would you say, millennials, if I told you there was a time when a DJ had to be skilled at the ones and twos (two turntables and a mixer, or simply the Technics SL 1200, depending on who you ask) – thus excluding such horrific concepts as ‘Guest DJ Paris Hilton’?

While the facts that many talented producers will make a playlist or use controllers for live sets doesn’t diminish their beatmaking/mix crafting skill, there’s still something lost in translation for anyone who’s seen an old school DJ flawlessly mix “Like a Prayer” with “99 Problems” through turntablism.

That’s why some fans of the art form are applauding a decision from L.A. nightclub Cure and The Cause (hopefully a paraphrased Simpsons reference) to ban laptops from the DJ booth.

Along with the clarifications in his Facebook post, club owner Kenny Summit and others also argued that the lack of ‘booth etiquette’ displayed by the laptop DJs being targeted was of equal importance. Of course, there’s now a raging debate on the topic (which actually simmers continuously and blows up every now and then).

Some big names even waded into the furor both for and against the anti-laptop move, with respected house DJ Seth Troxler commenting: “If the sync is on your [sic] an entertainer, not a DJ.” Fact is, the general nightclub-goer is probably going to agree with Facebook commenter Maximilian Rojas’ opinion: “As long as you make them dance!”
