'Tool told me the shortest song they’ve been working on is 12 minutes long.'

As of May 2016, it’s been 10 years since prog-metal masters Tool released their last album, 10,000 Days, and fans of nine-minute metal odysseys in 7/6 time based on Fibonacci sequences are getting restless. If Buzz Osborne’s comments to Team Rock are anything to go by, however, the wait will definitely be worth it for fans of Maynard and co.

Osborne was talking about The Melvins’ greatest albums when he let the tantalizing Tool info drop. King Buzzo was discussing his band’s 1994 classic, Stoner Witch, when he veered off topic to let everyone know that Tool guitarist Adam Jones had disclosed some classified knowledge of great interest to anyone who ever owned a phallic wrench T-shirt back in high school.

“I think it was the longest time we ever spent in the studio actually — 19 days, which for us is a long time,” Osborne said. “Bands like Tool obviously spend about six months on their albums, and they’ve spent about 10 years putting together the new one. And they haven’t even started recording yet, but Adam [Jones] told me the shortest song they’ve been working on is 12 minutes long. Anyway, Stoner Witch was great.”

Twelve minutes! Of course, that’s about par for the course when it comes to Tool, but still, encouraging news for longtime fans…. especially since things haven’t been smooth sailing in the Tool camp recently. Maynard said last year that his bandmates had to “con him into” playing a one-off Halloween show, and had some less-than-genial words for the band’s fans. In March, he told The Press Enterprise he and his bandmates had “found a common ground,” but “just can’t seem to move forward.”

Here’s hoping that 2016 won’t be entirely bereft of art-metal psych-journeys based on DMT-trip visions. Oh well, if so, there’s always the backup plan: looping “Night Goat” from Houdini for two hours in Garageband and dropping acid.
