'If women were equally rewarded for technical work they would feel inclined to participate more.'

Beloved Canadian electronic pop artist Claire Boucher (a.k.a. Grimes) hopped on Twitter over night to alternately kill v. maim the Juno Awards. Her main assertion is that “women are kind of absent.”

The annual award show announced its list of 2016 nominees on February 2. Drake, Justin Bieber, and The Weeknd unsurprisingly lead the pack, while Polaris Prize winner Buffy Sainte-Marie gets a few nods, and AUX favourite U.S. Girls lands a surprising nomination in the “alternative album” category.

Of course, Boucher’s observations are still completely salient points. Noting that there were no female nominations for album, artist, recording engineer, or producer of the year awards, she said “if women were equally rewarded for technical work they would feel inclined to participate more.” She then highlighted WondaGurl, Allie X, and Mozart’s Sister as artists worthy of the Junos’ consideration.

Grimes later deleted her Tweets but Exclaim! was able to quote them before they were pulled down:
