Toronto trio Several Futures‘ debut album, Before You Forget, is coming soon on Forking Paths Records, but we’ve got the whole thing streaming right now below.
Before You Forget marks a more indie rock-indebted sound than their 2014 Narrative Collapse EP; this time sounding more like Daydream Nation/Goo-era Sonic Youth jamming with short-lived English post-punkers Ikara Colt than say, Bob Mould.
The (very slightly) breezier sound complements guitarist and vocalist Matt Nish-Lapidus’s pronouncements, but don’t think it’s all going to be a post-punk picnic. Straight-ahead rockers like “Deep Connection” and “Welcome To Fear City” give way to abrasive, chaotic, almost Glenn Branca-esque noise sections without warning.
Produced in an entirely DIY manner, the album was self-recorded by the band using a portable studio set-up in Toronto’s Ratspace. “We did focus on creating a mirror image song structure when we sequenced the album — you’ll find four pairs of songs that have been twinned, each pair with a similar feeling,” says bassist/vocalist/Wavelength music series co-founder Jonny Dovercourt. Someone call Olivia Dunham: Before You Forget draws inspiration from science fiction theories about parallel universes and multiple timelines.

Several Futures’ Toronto album release show takes place Saturday, February 6 at CineCycle with Kurt Marble, The Sulks, and Spoils.
