Owen Sound's Black Country conjure wintery psych-country inspired by Ennio Morricone.
The second album from Owen Sound-based psychedelic country outfit Black Country is due out soon, but we’ve got the whole self-titled release streaming below.
From the first windswept moments of “Black Gold”, you know you’re not in for a straightforward, breezy listen. Barren and desolate, Black Country ebbs and flow between cosmic Americana as orchestrated by Ennio Morricone and something much darker: eight visions of ruined, wintery bleakness. The closer, “Deep Dark Blue”, is the album’s biggest curveball and its brightest light with a heavy stoner doom metal vibe. Call it Boris & Dunn, scratch that, Brooks & Sunn O))).
Fittingly, main Black Country denizen Joshua Richardson works as a psychiatric nurse when not crafting psych-country voyages, and his day job informs every aspect of the music. The album was recorded at Richardson’s home studio in Owen Sound, along with a cast of musicians including The Silver Hearts‘ Charles Glasspool, Russian Futurists‘ Scott Farmer, and local fiddler Tyler Beckett.
