Alternate Headline: 40-year-old punks mad about high school musical.

Censorship? More like censordookie, right buds? That’s the stance Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is taking in an unlikely battle with the brass at a Connecticut high school.

The students at Enfield High were planning on staging their own production of American Idiot this year, but concerns over content in the musical (swearing! sex! drugs!) led to parents expressing their worries and the principal shutting things down. WHAT’S THE MATTER, PRINCIPAL RULEMAKER? SCARED OF SHIT GETTING TOO REAL??? Nah, we kid. We have no dog in this fight.

Word of the axed show eventually made it back to Armstrong and (surprise!) he’s not particularly enthused by the school’s decision. Did he write an Instagram message of protest about Enfield’s sacked show? Of course he did. Tasteful hashtags, whisk us away!

dear Enfield high school board, #enfieldhighschoolmusical #highschoolidiot #enfieldidiot
It has come to my attention that you cancelled your high school theater production of American Idiot.
I realize the content of the Broadway production of AI is not quite “suitable” for a younger audience.
However there is a high school rendition of the production and I believe that’s the one Enfield was planning to perform which is suitable for most people.
it would be a shame if these high schoolers were shut down over some of the content that may be challenging for some of the audience. but the bigger issue is censorship. this production tackles issues in a post 9/11 world and I believe the kids should be heard. and most of all be creative in telling a story about our history.
I hope you reconsider and allow them to create an amazing night of theater!
as they say on Broadway .. “the show must go on!” rage and love
Billie Joe Armstrong
ps. I love that your school is called “Raiders”

Depending on how you view Billie Joe Armstrong, that splash of text is either a sensible bit of criticism from an important artist or pompous wind-bagging from the “Longview” guy. Either way, Billboard reports that the school has replaced American Idiot with Little Shop Of Horrors.
