The legendary hip-hop trio pass the mic to a new generation.

From the sampladelic wizardry of Paul’s Boutique to the live instrumentation of Check Your Head to the free-flowing fusions of Hello Nasty, the Beastie Boys were true studio innovators. Now, the sonic legacy of the hip-hop trio lives on in a deal signed with New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. Senior students of the BFA program will have the chance to produce original material in the Beasties’ Oscilloscope Laboratories recording studio.

Jeff Rabhan, chair of the Clive Davis Institute and a former employee of Atlantic and Electra Records, excitedly revealed the news:

According to the studio’s website “humans and animals who have blessed the Scope over the years” include Kanye West, M.I.A., Jack White, and Bad Brains. The Beastie Boys’ final three albums To The 5 Boroughs, The Mix Up, and Hotsaucecommitteeparttwo were all laid down there as well. If the words ARP 2600 or Fairchild Reverbatron mean anything to you, spin by the “apparatus” section of their site to drool over the studio’s selection of gear.
