Joni Mitchell, The Cowboy Junkies, Sloan, and Peaches take home awards.

Launched this year, the Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize honours albums released before the Polaris Prize’s launch in 2006, with Canadian releases from the four previous decades eligible for nomination.

Selected by Polaris jurors, five nominees each from the 1960s-70s, the ’80s, the ’90s and the the ’00s-05 were shortlisted for the prize earlier this year, and were then voted on by the general public.

Today, the winners were announced. Here are the recipients of the 2015 Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize:

1960-1970s: Joni Mitchell – Blue

1980s – The Cowboy Junkies – The Trinity Session

1990s – Sloan – Twice Removed

2000-2005 – Peaches – The Teaches of Peaches

The winning albums will be celebrated with a tribute concert early next year, with trophies presented to the artists and commemorative prints of each of the albums available to the public. “As with the main prize, we hope this award will lead to more discussion and discovery of timeless recorded art from our history,” said Steve Jordan, Polaris founder and executive director.
