Sorry, emo kids - tight trousers can cause serious damage to nerves and muscles.

The bands of the Warped Tour are going to want to sit down for this one (if their seemingly painted on pants will allow): doctors are now officially warning the public that skinny jeans and other viciously tight legwear can cause serious damage.

While it’s not the first documented case, the story of an Australian woman that had to be cut out of her jeans after her calves “ballooned in size” has medical professionals re-iterating the potential dangers of skinny jeans. She apparently developed ‘compartment syndrome,’ a condition caused by bleeding or swelling within an enclosed area. The Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry reported that after pressure built in her lower legs, the woman’s muscles and nerves became damaged and she fell, spending hours laying on the ground unable to get up until being discovered.

Doctors did concede that this was a rare case in which a ‘perfect storm’ of factors were present; she had spent many hours kneeling in a position that caused her muscles to swell inwards, increasing the pressure on them. However, a study that makes the advanced age of researchers obvious by hilariously referencing “tight new fashion low cut trousers” outlined numerous less extreme cases, while another warned of effects on men including urinary infections, low sperm count, and a 1/50 chance of being that guy who twists a testicle in his too-tight trousers.

So, what’s the takeaway here? Doctors have stressed the fact that the risk of serious injury due to skinny jeans is a relatively small one. Yet for every 10 Black Veil Brides, there’s one sad emo kid with a twisted nut.
