The Winnipeg band's debut ranges from spirited folk-rock to wistful mellow gold.

Heartbeat City’s debut album, Thunder Amongst Us, is due out on August 7th, and it’s been a long time coming: frontman Ian LaRue has been a fixture in the Winnipeg music scene for over a decade. With diverse projects such as poetry collectives and collaborations with hardcore bands already under his belt, LaRue founded Heartbeat City in 2010 with the aim of bringing his brand of spirited folk-rock to life, and we’re excited to premiere it below.

Self-produced by the band at Winnipeg’s Paintbox Recording, Thunder Amongst Us is alternately raucous and melancholic: Energetic rockers like opener “Small Victories” and the Casio-backed “Lighthouse” sit alongside more mellow, wistful moments like “Darker Than” and “Ghost”. The contrast works, giving the album a sleek ebb and flow of energy that would impress even the most jaded reiki expert/music fan. Recording the album “was an exercise in patience and respect for authenticity and sincerity” says LaRue. Check out the album stream below.
