For in-the-wool rockists, Jack White is known as a man of taste: He’s notoriously a fan of Elvis rarities. He’s used his Third Man Records imprint to cut releases by artists such as John C. Reilly. Heck, he’s even known to appreciate a good guacamole. White can certainly appreciate the finer things in music, which is why we were shocked to discover his favourite Metallica album. It isn’t Ride The Lightning. Nor is it And Justice For All. It ain’t Master Of Puppets. It isn’t even Load or its follow-up, Reload.

Nope. White is a St. Anger man, through and through.

So, how can one of rock’s best-respected names love an album that sounds like it’s recorded inside a trash can? Beats us. But according to Bob Rock, the producer behind the seminally terrible album, White admitted that he’s a secret supporter of St. Anger.

According to Rock, White revealed his true feelings at a film event.

I was at [a movie] premiere, and Jack White came over. He says, ‘I’m Jack White.’ I said, ‘I know.’ He says, ‘That’s my favorite Metallica album.’ So I’m okay with those two.

More surprising, still? Rock says that Jimmy Page has also expressed his love for St. Anger. We don’t get it either.
