Metallica have spent the last few years doing everything right. They’ve kept Lars on a leash, played rare cuts and classic albums live, and done basically everything to help us forget Lulu ever happened. But fans that were surprisingly happy with Death Magnetic, iffy mastering aside, have spent the last seven years twiddling their fingers, wondering when something new is coming.

According to the band, soon. But not soon enough, because there’s a problem: Kirk Hammett recently lost his cellphone, which he says contained about 250 riff and song ideas.

The cynic in us has two questions: First, has he not heard of the cloud? Second, who knew there were that many blues scales?

But we digress. Like a lot of musicians, Hammett apparently uses his iPhone for brainstorms, and we can’t imagine the gut-punch it must have been to lose that many in such a foul swoop.

It still might turn up. I’m hoping it will. To try to remember those riffs…? I can only remember, like, eight of ’em.

He went onto tell Jamey Jasta that their new album, whenever it happens, is “super riffy” and “super riffy,” and that while it’s similar to Death Magnetic, it also isn’t.

He also says that while there are a couple of songs that remind him of …And Justice for All, “the album doesn’t sound like …And Justice For All.”

So, uh… anyways. A new Metallica album is coming. It might only have eight riffs on it? And it might sound like Death Magnetic, but it might not, and it will remind you of …And Justice for All even though it won’t sound like it. Got it. Thanks for the update, Kirk.
