TRENDING: 9 must-listen songs for the week of October 24th

After weeks of day dreaming about it, I’m finally heading out of country tomorrow for a week off in Mexico. Being self-employed, I’ve always had a hard time letting go of work while on vacation, although I’ve really been working on it. It seems so odd to say that I’m working on becoming a better vacationer… weird.

While making my packing list of things to bring, I also found these 9 great tunes from the Hype Machine charts this week. Put this on over the weekend; I’ll be taking it to the beach with me. Here’s what made my “Trending” playlist this week. Take a spin and read my assessments below.

1. “No One Needs To Know” by HAERTS

Leading off with one of my favourite bands of recent years, NYC’s HAERTS with “No One Needs To Know.” Featuring Nin Fabi’s stunning vocal delivery, the track was released in anticipation of their self-titled debut album out next week via Columbia Records. For fans of Stars or The Preatures.

2. “Superstitions” by Misun

Misun are a LA/DC electro trio who have spent the last year releasing a series of singles online, working up to the release of a debut album (out Nov. 11th). The album’s title track, “Superstitions,” features a crisp drum machine beat, a kaleidoscope of synths and a catch vocal hook of lead-singer Misun Wojcik.

3. “Actors”(Dinnerdate Remix) by Still Parade

I love this remix. Simon Hoppe, aka Dinnerdate, spins a laid back house vibe into the downtempo acoustics of Still Parade’s “Actors”. For fans of a more dancey, electronic Bon Iver.

4. “Break The Rules” (ODESZA Remix) by Charli XCX

Even though she’s absolutely everywhere at the moment, I’m really not too familiar with Charli XCX’s music. I came upon this remix not by the original artist, but by the remixer, Seattle duo ODESZA. Comparing this version to the original, I’m leaning more towards ODESZA’s take.  Anyone got a dance floor they want to tear up this weekend? Try this remix.

5. “Open Season” by Josef Salvat

Two months later and I’m featuring electro crooner Josef Salvat again. From the “In Your Prime” EP comes “Open Season,” my favourite song discovery of this past week. Stick it out until the chorus, you won’t be sorry.

6. “Freak” by Olivver

Olivver is Bryan Sammis, former Neighborhood drummer and now highly buzzed about solo artist. His latest track is “Freak,” the title track off his forthcoming EP. Featuring a undeniable 80′s sheen, get lost in those airy synths, gentle guitars, while picturing a scene from your favourite 80’s movie.

7. “Swim Team” by Arms and Sleepers

This song from Arms and Sleepers is so chill. “Swim Team” features a catchy trip-hop beat, combined with a mosaic of unique samples and sounds. Look for the song on an album of the same name, out October 28 from Fake Chapter Records.

8. “TRNDSTTR (feat. M. Maggie)” by Black Coast

Black Coast (aka Stan Rapoport) is a Brooklyn producer, who started collaborating with fellow New Yorker M Maggie Miller in a very common way these days. Connected by a mutual friend, the 2 began working on the track entirely over phone, text and email, all before meeting each other in real life.

9. “Hypnotic” by Zella Day

Finally, I’m finishing off the mix with something infectious.“Hypnotic” by Arizona-born, L.A.-based Zella Day is the final track from her four-song eponymous debut EP.
