See, the thing about Kid Rock is that while he’s widely known for being a Jim Beam swigging, stripper-loving badass, he’s also quietly gained a reputation behind the scenes as a loveable, stand-up dude.

Case in point, he surprised superfan Dan McGurk at his 30th birthday the other day, dropping in unannounced after McGurk, who has down syndrome, invited him to the party earlier this summer.

In Detroit, Kid Rock is essentially a demigod. Things like this are a great indication of why.

The first bit of the video is all about suspense. After McGurk says he hopes Kid Rock shows up to sing him happy birthday, a family member says “I don’t know, he’s pretty busy.” You can see his mother smirk.

You can almost sense McGurk’s disappointment when a restaurant employee butchers “Happy Birthday.” But then, as his father tries to make sure he’s having a great birthday, the magic happens, and seriously?
How can you not smile at this.

Or this:

Kid Rock hung out with Dan for a bit, gave him a signed poster, signed guitar, an American Badass hat and a night he’ll likely never forget. [h/t Vanyaland]
