Sufjan Stevens and Paul McCartney join in on the Miley Cyrus parade. If there's an easier way to stay relevant, we haven't heard of it.

The list of things Sufjan Stevens has been doing instead of finishing his Fifty States project is ever-growing, with nitpicking a 20-something pop-stars grammar quickly shooting towards the top of the list.

Because it’s an easy way to get your name in the news (see!), Stevens joined Sinead O’Connor, Paul McCartney and probably a dozen others with an open letter that serves no real purpose other than to remind people that he’s a person that still exists.

In it, Sufjan says he loves Miley’s song “#GETITRIGHT” if not for its grammatical gaffes.

“One particular line causes concern: ‘I been laying in this bed all night long,'” wrote Stevens. “Miley, technically speaking, you’ve been LYING, not LAYING, an irregular verb form that should only be used when there’s an object.”

Yes, Sufjan. You’re very smart.

“We all make mistakes, and surely this isn’t your worst misdemeanor. But also, Miley, did you know the tense here is also totally wrong,” he continues, patronizing Cyrus with referenes to the Present Perfect Continuous Tense and Mike Tyson.

Seriously, dude?

Stevens goes onto say he loves Miley Cyrus, calling her “the hottest cake in the pan” and advising her to “live brightly before [her] fire fades into total darkness.”

And then there’s Sinead O’Connor, who’s still writing to the “Wrecking Ball” singer long after people stopped paying attention. We’re not going to bother quoting that one, but suffice to say Sinead’s still looking for her apology, this time calling Cyrus a bully and equating Miley’s admittedly insensitive jibes to the level of abuse that leads to suicide.

But you didn’t think that was it, did you? No, of course not.

Paul McCartney came to Miley’s defence this weekend, wisely pointing out that “you couldn’t see anything” in the “Wrecking Ball” video and saying her VMAs performance was far from a big deal. “She was dancing with Robin Thicke at the awards. So what? C’mon, we’ve all seen worse than that.”
