You know that well-intentioned, if uninvited open letter Sinead O’Connor wrote to Miley Cyrus?

Yeah. It didn’t go so well. Miley obviously read it and didn’t take too kindly to the advice. Her responses were brief, if not completely inappropriate. On Twitter, she compared Sinead O’Connor to Amanda Bynes, alluding to each’s struggle with mental illness.

Then she posted this infamous image of Sinead O’Connor ripping up a picture of Pope John Paul II back in 1992.

That’s when all hell broke loose. First, another letter from O’Connor.

“Who the fuck is advising you? Because taking me on is even more fuckin’ stupid than behaving like a prostitute and calling it feminism,” she wrote on Facebook. “You have posted today tweets of mine which are two years old, which were posted by me when I was unwell and seeking help so as to make them look like they are recent.”

O’Connor goes on to threaten legal action, asking Miley to remove her tweets “immediately” or risk hearing from her lawyers.

“It is not acceptable to mock any person for having suffered,” said O’Connor. “It is most unbecoming of you to respond in such a fashion to someone who expressed care for you.”

Clearly riled up, O’Connor did cross the line herself, later calling Cyrus an “anti-female tool of the anti-female music industry,” but this was far from the last of it.

Unsurprisingly, that prompted a third letter.

“I have no interest whatsoever in meeting you,” wrote O’Connor. “When you publicly apologise to Amanda and myself and all mental health sufferers as well as all who were abused by priests that will end the matter as far as I am concerned.”

It goes on from there.

“When you end up in the psych ward or rehab I’ll be happy to visit you.. and would not lower myself to mock you,” she continued. “Be a proper woman and make the public apologies I have listed above. Your hosting SNL is a bullshit reason for not taking five minutes to do the right thing and your behaviour yesterday will rebound upon you very badly.”

Okay. So how are we supposed to take this? Sinead O’Connor is absolutely correct to point out that Miley has crossed the line in mocking her and Bynes’ mental illness, but the entier thing started because of O’Connor’s passive aggressive rant. The phrase “act your age” comes to mind here; Sinead, thinking she’s acted as a guide or guardian, comes off as much as a 20-year-old as Miley. The whole thing absolutely reeks of two talented singers in very different stages of their life and career who both possess a remarkable sense of entitlement.

O’Connor regularly asks Miley in these letters who’s “looking after her,” but who’s looking out for Sinead? She’s had the help she needs, no doubt, but will always struggle with mental illness, and by engaging in Miley’s little game she’s hurting her own well being. She’s uncorking all the work she’s put towards becoming healthy of mind and is letting a publicity stunt get the better of her. Miley Cyrus is hosting Saturday Night Live. Want to bet all of this somehow factors into the show? Sinead O’Connor clearly means well, but she’s stands to gain absolutely nothing from this spat. She’s inviting old demons that Miley’s happy to present because, for better or worse, she’s still a bit of a brat.

Remember, this started over Miley’s harmless comparison of “Wrecking Ball” to “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was clearly said in admiration for Sinead. Cyrus crossed a line, that’s for sure, but let it go Sinead.
