We didn’t need Miley or Jimmy Kimmel to tell us that twerking has jumped the shark.

We didn’t need Miley or Jimmy Kimmel to tell us that twerking has jumped the shark. And that’s because hordes of web commenters confirmed the fact: Some called Miley’s moment shameful and shocking. Others said felt that the reaction was oversensitive. Comments sections exploded with expletive-laden debate, and everyone, including your grandmother, had an opinion.

All this over a simple flick of the gluteus maximus.

So here’s our proposition: Let’s get over twerking. Its pop-cultural moment passed eons ago. Instead, we’re going to suggest these dances as twerking’s successor, inspired by the new Budweiser Crown. Post up your suggestions in the comments!

The Maraschino Step

In the month since it hit Vine, the Maraschino Step has been hailed as the new Harlem Shake. For good reason: Part smooth, part downright hilarious, the Step’s nothing short of hypnotic. There are dozens of clips of people attempting it, but the best version is the original, featuring Sione Maraschino dancing to Kendrick Lamar in a parking lot.

The Fox

80 million views can’t be wrong, can they? Ylvis’s “The Fox” went viral in September, for three reasons: a., the sounds animals make are hilarious, b., no one knows exactly what sound a fox makes, and c., THE DANCE. It’s best described as part “Thriller”-style Frankenstein, part “Gangnam Style,” part chongo mosh, and all incredible. We’re calling this the best animal-suit video since the Bloodhound Gang’s “The Bad Touch.”

The “I Quit”

While not quite at the levels of “The Fox,” the “I Quit” dance is yet another heatseeking dance craze. Originally performed by Marina Shifrin, a disgruntled journalist working a midnight shift, the “I Quit” is an interpretative dance set to Kanye’s “Gone.” The kicker? She uses the dance as her symbolic two-week notice. (Her employers, Next Media Animation, wished her well but told her not to return.) NMA, being in the business of creating viral videos, responded with their own parody of Shifrin’s vid, but we’ll be honest—like a Dove Men-sponsored flash mob, it reeked of a company desperately trying to be hip.

Brazil’s Ah Lelek Lek Lek

OK, we’ll be honest: We’d never heard of this Brazilian dance either. That is, until Beyonce did it last month in Brazil. Turns out the Ah Lelek Lek Lek is already certified viral, with almost 40 million YouTube views. It’s a sure bet that, like the gravity-defying Brazilian booty claps that preceded twerking, we’ll be importing this one from Rio soon.

The Gas Pedal

The Gas Pedal is a mystery on par with the moonwalk: No one knows what it’s supposed to be, and no one knows how to pull it off. Aside, perhaps, from its orginators. This is essentially the dance version of this puppy licking a lime.

The Crazy Things We Do

While YouTube user Ego scored a minor hit in “The Crazy Things We Do,” the video spawned a sad few imitators. We have no idea why, either: Boasting Reboot-worthy CGI graphics and graceful, long-limbed gorillas practicing windmills, “The Crazy Things We Do” has been our pre- and post-party staple for months.

The End Zone Dance

JT is no stranger to pioneering dance crazes, and that’s why we’re supporting this hilarious segment with Jimmy Fallon. We’d encourage anyone to try the “Earthquake Waiter,” the “Manti T’eo On a Date,” or our fave, the “The Justin Timberlake (from N’Sync).” And these dances are becoming actually real: Detroit Lions tight end Joseph Fauria performed the Timberlake after scoring a touchdown last week. Believe, pals.
