It’s considered to be quite the honour to be invited to a Boiler Room session, so you can imagine the surprise on everyone’s face when Grimes made a trip to DJ Richie Hawtin’s house for her session and totally took the piss out of the entire concept.

Rather than spin her own songs or make new mixes like most artists on the sessions would, Grimes smirked off the experience and did what she wanted instead. That included playing Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey’s Christmas classic, the Venga Boys and even the autotuned version of the “Can’t Hug Every Cat” video. This one:

Because people take their Boiler Room sets super seriously, Grimes was immediately called a troll, an accusation she denied in a now deleted tweet. The reality is probably somewhere in the middle—she’s hard to read as an artist, and while she was clearly going against the grain with some intent, who’s to say she didn’t really dig what she was spinning? I mean, Taylor Swift kind of rules…

Sure, she texted most of her set, but the entire Boiler Room concept is a bit silly when you dial it down. Her performance has it made its way online yet. We’ll embed it when it does.
