What do Morrissey and Charlie Brown have in common? Nothing, except for their deep existential malaise, a perpetual disappointment with the human condition, and a shared commitment to animal rights. (OK, not that last one.)

Nonetheless, Peanuts and Hatful of Hollow are built around deep melancholy, and that’s precisely why This Charming Charlie, a Tumblr developed by San Francisco designer Lauren Loprete, works. Its effect, like similar projects like the beloved Garfield Minus Garfield, brings whole new life to Moz’s penmanship and Charles M. Schulz’s comics—I mean, after all, there’s something that’s jarringly poignant about seeing Charlie Brown, kept awake all night, thinking that “last night I dreamt that somebody loved me.”
