Reports seeping out of Detroit last night revealed Jack White to be the anonymous donor who paid more than $142,000 in back taxes to save Detroit’s Masonic Temple, a massive city-block sized venue that White’s frequented throughout his life, both as a performer and with his mother, who worked there as an usher. The temple is considered to be one of the, if not the biggest Masonic Temples in the world.

According to Huffington Post, White made the donation anonymously just four days prior to its June 3rd deadline. While it’s since come out that he was the mind behind the generous act, White has yet to comment on the donation.

Temple staff, meanwhile, are absolutely ecstatic and plan on renaming its 1586-seat Cathedral Theater the “Jack White Theater.”

“Jack’s donation could not have come at a better time and we are eternally grateful to him for it,” said Detroit Masonic Temple Association President Roger Sobran in a news release. “Jack’s magnanimous generosity and unflinching loyalty to this historic building and his Detroit roots is appreciated beyond words.” [via WXYZ]
