Thirty years ago, The Beastie Boys released their first official single. If that doesn’t make you feel old, you probably don’t know who The Beastie Boys are.
In the spring of 1983, The Beastie Boys released their first official hip-hop recording, “Cooky Puss,” a twelve inch single via Rat Cage Records. Though the group had been together since 1981, their only previous recording, Polly Wog Stew, was recorded during the band’s hardcore punk incarnation, and did not yield an official single. The success of “Cooky Puss” meant a new direction for the band — one that would lead to nearly thirty more years of fresh and foolish interplay between Ad-Rock, Mike D, and MCA.
