In the latest edition of itsHatesong feature, AVClub points out that Frank Turner has rightly earned the reputation as the nicest guy in music. But as approachable, well spoken and genuinely solid as Turner’s established himself to be over the years, he’s never shied away from having his own opinion. Recently, he was inexplicably called out for having less than left-of-centre political affiliations (who cares?), and now he’s gone and said the unexpected again, saying the one song he hates most in the world is John Lennon’s “Imagine”.

Calling the song an utterly vacuous Hallmark card set to music, Turner says the track is hypocritical and patronizing. But never one to be contrarian just because he can, Turner goes onto call Lennon the best Beatles songwriter and says that the track “seems almost lazy” by Lennon’s standards.

In addition to citing the song’s production, lyrics and sappiness, Turner also admits that its popularity also gets to him.

“I think one of the things that grinds for me, though, is the way it’s a kind of fall-back ‘favourite song’ for people who don’t have any interest in music,” he says. “It’s a default setting for the tasteless.”

It’s a pretty telling and very interesting feature worth reading. Do so in full over at AVClub.
