The rock legend says his post-Beatles supergroup weren't the greatest band on the run.

1970s rock supergroup and Alan Partridge faves Wings never really got the respect of Sir Paul McCartney’s previous outfit, whatever they were called. (The Buggles, I think?)

Wings consisted of McCartney, his wife Linda, and a revolving door cast of others including Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine and more session musicians than a Band Aid charity single. Longtime Wings haters can now rejoice in being vindicated, as a new interview with McCartney makes clear he has a similar opinion of his former supergroup.

Speaking on Wings’ legacy to veteran BBC broadcaster John Wilson for BBC Radio 4’s MasterTapes, Sir Paul was highly critical of Wings’ output. “We were terrible. We weren’t a good group. People said, ‘Well, Linda can’t play keyboards’, and it was true”. He continued: “But you know, Lennon couldn’t play guitar when we started. We knew Linda couldn’t play, we didn’t know each other, but we learned. We had some funny experiences. Looking back on it, I’m really glad we did it.”

McCartney does credit Wings with helping him break out of post-Beatles funk, however, which he compared to being in army corps, albeit with slightly more showy uniforms. “I was depressed. It was very depressing. You were breaking from your lifelong friends, we used to liken it to the army – we had been army buddies for a few years, and now you weren’t going to see them again”.

McCartney also said he had stayed in contact with John Lennon in the intervening decade between the Beatles breaking up and Lennon’s murder in December 1980. “I would make calls to John occasionally,” McCartney said. “We just talked kids and baking bread.”

If you’re in the UK, or are savvy with a VPN, you can watch the filmed version of the interview in full here.
