A trip to rehab for Billie Joe Armstrong forced Green Day to cancel quite a few of their promotional appearances this week. Jagged Little Pill-popper Alanis Morisette stepped up to the plate, and filled in as a last-minute replacement for Tuesday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. As if that wasn’t enough, she decided to put together a stripped-down piano ballad version of Green Day’s 1994 classic “Basket Case.”

After an expletive-filled freak-out at the iHeart Radio Music Festival, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong enrolled in a rehabilitation program for alcoholism this week. Given the fact that Green Day was right in the middle of a full-steam promotional cycle for their new album ¡Uno!, the band was forced to cancel quite a few commitments, including a live performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Luckily, a fellow product of the ’90s stepped up to the plate and did Green Day and Jimmy Kimmel a bro-solid.

Jagged Little Pill-popper Alanis Morisette filled in as a last-minute replacement for Tuesday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. As if that wasn’t enough, she decided to put together a stripped-down piano ballad version of Green Day’s 1994 classic “Basket Case.” Her twist on the normally bombastic pop-punk anthem put the lyrics in an interesting context, and it’s hard not to think about Billie Joe’s struggles with addiction as Alanis lends her distinct warble to his words. At the end of the performance, she finishes with “We love you, Billie Joe.”

Check out the performance below. Maybe when Billie Joe sobers up, he can return the favour, and do a snotty, amped-up version of “Hands Clean” on the JKL stage.
