The BET Awards were this Sunday, and if you’re Canadian, you were probably too preoccupied with fireworks and national pride to take in one of hip-hop and R&B’s biggest award shows. Rather than focus on each and every nugget of interest, we thought we’d bring you a brief recap of five of the most show-stopping-est moments from the broadcast.

The BET Awards were this Sunday, and if you’re Canadian, you were probably too preoccupied with fireworks and national pride to take in one of hip-hop and R&B’s biggest award shows.

While you were eating waffle cones and staring slack-jawed at the sky, it just so happened that the BET Awards came through with enough glitz and scandal to fill Pop Hunter’s pages with gossipy goodness for an entire week. Rather than focus on each and every nugget of interest, we thought we’d bring you a brief recap of five of the most show-stopping-est moments from the broadcast.

Wale Spilled Jay-Z’s Drink

As is so meme-fully demonstrated by the above GIF, Wale was so excited about winning Best Collaboration for “Lotus Flower Bomb” featuring Miguel, he decided to run over and show his Roc Nation manager Jay-Z some love. Instead of pounding Jay-Z’s fist, Wale knocked the champagne flute right out of Jay’s hand. Knowing Hov’s taste, it probably wasn’t just a glass of Baby Duck that went to waste.

Nicki Minaj Wore Four Different Outfits

Hip-hop’s reigning queen was true to her diva-status on Sunday night, busting out no fewer than four outfits. She adorned a black tutu for her performance of “Champion,” then realizing how ass-masking it was, she ripped it off, and was joined by 2 Chainz for “Beez In The Trap.” Later, she chilled in the front row with Kim Kardashian, wearing some knee-high leather platforms, and finally, she accepted her award for Female Hip-Hop Artist Of The Year wearing snakeskin pants and a yellow tube-top that looks small enough to be a headband. I’m guessing that this is laundry week at the Minaj household.

D’Angelo’s Triumphant Return

After more than a decade spent in hiding, D’Angelo returned to the stage, performing his classic “Unitled (How Does it Feel?)” as well as a brand new song. There might have been a serious lack of abs featured in his performance, but D’Angelo proved that he hasn’t missed a step vocally.

Mindless Behavior Disrespected Their Elders and Pissed Off Beyoncé

Pint-sized boyband Mindless Behavior dissed Lauryn Hill while presenting the award for Best Female R&B Artist, and drew some immediate ire from the winner of the award. In a scripted exchange, co-presenter and comedian Mike Epps jokingly attempted to sing. One of the members of Mindless Behavior quipped “You sing bad…like Lauryn Hill’s tax accountant bad,” alluding to Hill`s recent tax troubles.

The misfired joke was received with gasps and boos from the audience, and when Beyoncé was revealed to be the winner of the award, she defended Lauryn in her acceptance speech: “I want to thank all the talented R&B women that came before me like Lauryn Hill and Mary J. Blige.”

The too-soon joke originated from one of the writers of the BET Awards Show, and now Mindless Behavior have to deal with the resulting fallout. They made a statement through the group`s Twitter account yesterday:

Jay-Z Kanye’d Kanye

When Kanye West and Jay-Z won the award for Video Of The Year (beating out Beyoncé!), Jay-Z made a reference to the now-infamous “Imma let you finish” fiasco from the 2009 MTV Music Video Awards. Our only complaint is that Jay-Z didn’t even get it right!

He said “Excuse me Kanye, Imma let you continue,” instead of “Imma let you finish.” Regardless of that little variance, the entire place erupted in laughter, and Kanye managed to laugh it off too. The bromance is strong between these two.

And as an added bonus, here’s the complete G.O.O.D. Music performance from the awards, including “Mercy,” “Way Too Cold (Theraflu),” and a pretty powerful acapella verse from Kanye’s unreleased track “New God Flow”:
