Record Store Day was on Saturday, which means your local independent music retailer (if you still have one) was likely inundated with music fans and vinyl collectors scrambling to pick up copies of some RSD exclusive limited pressings. It’s probably the only time of year there’s actually a lineup outside of most of these stores. Even if you believe Record Store Day is a marketing invention (i.e. the Valentine’s Day to greeting card companies), it’s nice to see some enthusiasm for purchasing music. Come on! Artificial rarity isn’t nearly as evil as Hallmark.

Here’s the problem with RSD releases that are limited in quantity and limited to geographical regions — for every genuine collector and music fan, there’s at least one greedy, money-grubbing record scalper in the RSD lineups. These are the guys that stake out a prime seat in line the night before, buy anything that is “rare,” and toss the records on eBay immediately to see what kind of a profit they can turn.
