Mavis Staples, Ben Folds, Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard and more usher in the Colbert era.

In his inaugural appearance as host of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert proved he has friends in musical places. David Letterman was obviously no slouch in that area, but Colbert impressively ushered in the new era with a genre- and generation-spanning “superjam.”

Bandleader Jon Batiste (a widely accomplished jazz pianist who you may recognize from HBO’s Treme) was joined by Mavis Staples, Ben Folds, Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard, Buddy Guy, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and Colbert himself for a fitting cover of Sly and the Family Stone’s “Everyday People”. Watch it below:

Colbert keeps things rolling with his second episode featuring Kendrick Lamar. Open wide baby bird, ’cause momma’s got a big fat night crawler of Truth Jams.
