Side One Dummy records co-founder Bill Armstrong has founded a new, what he calls “music discovery site,” getting more than 30 independent labels on board to share music from their artists in a social-networking platform. The site is called TheNewRecord.com.

With a one-time free sign-up, users will be able to play and download unlimited free MP3s, use a built-in widget to embed songs or playlists, create and swap customizable playlists, and share it wherever they are interactive online—Facebook, Twitter, email, etc.

“As a fan, I felt that new music wasn’t being organized in a way that made it easy to find,” says Armstrong. “I wanted a filtered environment with what I consider other high quality artists whom we might share similar or even some of the same fans.” This comes close on the heels of mega-biz Facebook’s announcement of new music feature integration.

So far, the label list includes the following: Anti-, Sub Pop, Epitaph, Kill Rock Stars, New Century Media, Nettwerk, Daptone Records, Side One Dummy, VP, ANGR, Asian Man, Bar-None, Brushfire, Dualtone, Equal Vision, Fat Wreck, Hellcat, Hollywood Waste, Hopeless, Inside Out, Lefse, Long Live Crime, MapleMusic, Paper & Plastick, People Like You, Prospect Park, Relapse, Rhymesayers, Rise, Sabot, Sargent House, Superball, and Volcom.

Songs will be available before release, and through a follow fuction, you can stay on top of other users’ selections. At the time of writing, the site didn’t seem to be working. [via Hypebot]
