In a recent TV documentary DMC: Walk This Way, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels details the struggles he went through after battling Spasmodic Dysphonia for the better part of the past five years. The condition causes involuntary movements of the voice box muscles, and can ultimately result in loss of voice.

McDaniels says he turned to alchohol to deal with the depression brought on by the loss of his ability to rap. “I was at a point where I was losing it all, and Jack Daniels became my best friend. My other best friend was Jim Beam.”

At times McDaniels says he was suicidal, one time coming close to jumping off of a hotel balcony. Later, in the back of a car, he hears Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel” come on the radio, and it turned everything around. “I hear that song, and something in me says, ‘D, it’s good to be alive. Life is good.’ That song saved my life. It kept me from committing suicide.” Part of us wants to giggle at the song choice, but really, we’re sort of touched. You can watch a clip of the doc above.
