Fugees member Pras Michel has spoken out about his former bandmate Wyclef Jean announcing his run for presidency of the Republic of Haiti this past week and says he’ll support the rapper/social activists’ closest rival Michel Martelly.

Michel took to his twitter page recently and expressed his views on the situation saying, “It’s official, the people are asking for it. I’m here in the belly of Haiti, I endorse Michel Martelly as the next president of Haiti!”

Actor Sean Penn, a current resident on the island which suffered two massive earthquakes at the beginning of the year resulting in an estimated 300,000 deaths, has also dismissed Jean’s run for presidency because he hasn’t been there enough since the disaster, a comment Michel also supported.

Sean Penn understands what’s really going and understand what Haiti really needs,” Michel wrote. He later added that one of his major reasons for not endorsing Jean is because of his decision to formally announce his run for presidency on CNN.

“CNN is for the elite in Haiti, 80 percent of the people don’t do TV it’s more radio,” he said. “I want to make it unequivocally clear I love Wyclef to def, but he’s not [qualified] to be the leader of the new Haiti, especially after CNN.” [NME]
