James Jagger stars in the HBO series 'Vinyl', produced by his dad.

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with having different interests than your dad: in fact, that’s to be expected. Even if your father is a legendary frontman and songwriter nobody expects that, decades on, his band will necessarily be your favourite. When your band isn’t even your son’s favourite of that time period, however – well, that’s got to sting a little.

Beyond being the son of one the biggest rockstars of all time, 30-year-old James Jagger is an actor starring as Kip Stevens, singer of the punk band The Nasty Bits, in the HBO series Vinyl. Set in 1970s New York, the drama focuses on the era’s music industry and was produced by Martin Scorsese and James’ dad Mick.

After being asked the question he’s no doubt heard from hundreds of unimaginative journalists, James Jagger gave the following answer to the UK Independent: “When people ask me if I prefer The Rolling Stones or The Beatles, then I will always say The Rolling Stones. But if someone asks if I prefer The Rolling Stones or The Kinks, I’d choose The Kinks.”

C’mon James… you could have just left the second sentence out. Somewhere, Mick Jagger is forlornly playing “Cat’s in The Cradle” on an acoustic guitar worth more than your house.
